There are certain parenting milestones you expect.

First steps.

First day of school.

Learning to ride a bike.

But no one really prepares you for the day your child quietly grows up while you weren't looking.

The other morning, Dylan and I were standing in the living room when someone joked that we should compare our heights.

So we stood back-to-back.

I smiled.

He smiled.

And then we both realized...

He's almost as tall as I am.

Not someday.

Now.

It feels like yesterday he was asking to be picked up so he could reach the kitchen counter.

Now he's borrowing my phone charger, talking about technology projects, riding his e-bike around the neighborhood, and somehow looking me almost straight in the eye.

The funny thing is that I don't notice the change day to day.

Growth happens so gradually that your brain updates without you realizing it.

Then one random afternoon, you stand next to your child and think...

"Wait...when did this happen?"

I have a feeling this is one of those photos we'll treasure years from now.

Not because it's perfectly posed.

But because it captures one of those tiny transitions between childhood and adulthood that only lasts for a moment.

By next year he'll probably be taller than me.

And honestly...

I think I'll be okay with that.

Mostly.
