KITCHEN · Stand Mixers
For all the baking this house does, the stand mixer we chose is the KitchenAid Classic Series — it powers through double batches of dough without budging. Here's what we bought, plus a few others we seriously considered.
What We Chose

This is the stand mixer we actually use. The tilt-head motor handles double batches of dough and stiff icing without straining, the classic metal build lasts for years, and the attachment hub turns it into a whole prep station.
A great stand mixer should be powerful enough for stiff doughs, stable on the counter, and built to last for years. Below the one we chose, we've rounded up a few others we considered for different batch sizes and budgets.

Baking in our house is never a small operation. When our oldest gets it in his head to make cookies for his whole class, that’s a double batch of dough, and our old hand mixer would start smoking — literally, a little warm plastic smell — about two cups of flour in. More than one Sunday ended with Dad finishing the mixing by hand, arm cramping, muttering about it the whole time.
The KitchenAid Classic, the 4.5-quart tilt-head, retired that hand mixer for good. The motor handles double batches of dough and stiff icing without straining or wandering across the counter the way lighter mixers do — Mom loves that she can start it and actually walk away. The classic metal build feels like it was made to outlast us, and the attachment hub means it’s slowly becoming a whole prep station as we add pieces to it.
We weighed a couple of cheaper stand mixers and thought hard about just replacing the hand mixer again. But we’d already learned that budget models bog down under the exact heavy loads a family this size throws at them, which is the one job we actually needed it to do. The KitchenAid Classic is $349.99, and that number made us pause, but it’s the kind of thing our oldest may well take to his own kitchen someday. Nothing else we looked at felt built to last that long, and in a house that wears everything out, that longevity is worth paying for.
